LaTeX Tagging Project

Documentation for the Tagging Project

These pages document the current multi-year project to enable LaTeX to produce accessible (tagged) PDF files.

While the LaTeX core now produces accessible PDF/UA-2-conforming documents. Current focus is on enabling package authors to make documents using their packages similarly accessible.

Guidelines for using LaTeX to generate accessible PDF

We have written guidelines explaining how to use LaTeX to generate accessible PDFs. The documentation will be updated as new features become available.

Well Tagged PDF Examples

In conjunction with the PDF Association we have developed examples of generating well tagged PDF with LaTeX. One small example, and a larger worked example showing a typical two column STEM-subject article. This second example is accompanied by videos demonstrating how the document is read by screen readers in its original untagged form, tagged via various “auto-tagging” systems, or using tagging derived by LaTeX.

Status of Contributed LaTeX Classes and Packages

The Tagging Status pages document the current status of over 1000 Contributed packages. This status with respect to tagging is maintained with the help of a test suite run automatically in the CI system associated to this site.

In general one can use the command texdoc <package-name> on the command line to get documentation about a specific package. Instead of using texdoc on your machine you can also use the online version at https://texdoc.org.

The following list gives an overview about different packages related to tagging and some details on the contents of each:

For example, texdoc ltnews41 opens the LaTeX news for release 2025-06-01. Without the number, a document with the release notes from all releases since 1994 is opened. Similarly, texdoc blocks-doc will open the documentation on tagging of block-level environments for you.

To find a complete list of the currently available documents from the latex-lab please look at: https://ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex-dev/required/latex-lab.

Please also note that most of the documentation (as well as this page) is “work in progress”. Therefore, the list above might not completely reflect the current status of implementation.

Testing Tagged PDF documents

If you have a tagged PDF document and want to check the of the tagging you can try
